Fast food. Sometimes you eat it because it’s unavoidable. Sometimes you eat it because you’re out with others and that’s what the group wants to eat. Sometimes you eat it because you can’t wait or don’t have time to go home and prepare a meal. Sometimes you eat it because it’s convenient. And sometimes you eat it just because you feel like eating it. For many, the thought of fast food means burgers with fries and a soda, fried chicken with mashed potatoes and gravy, or burritos filled with meat and cheese.
But what if you’re vegan and eat only whole, plant-based foods? Where can you find whole, plant-based fast food? My two favorite fast food restaurants that have whole, plant-based foods are Chipotle Mexican Grill and Subway.
At Chipotle Mexican Grill, you can choose from a variety of items to build a salad, burrito, or tacos. They offer all fresh ingredients, many of which are plant-based. You can skip the meat, cheese, and sour cream and build an incredible whole, plant-based meal by choosing any or all of the following: brown rice, black beans (skip the pinto beans, they have pork), grilled onions and peppers, a mild onion and tomato salsa loaded with diced tomatoes, a sweet corn salsa loaded with sweet corn and cilantro, a hot salsa, chopped romaine lettuce, and fresh guacamole (no extra charge for the guacamole if your meal is veggie). Beware, the portions are huge and you may not be able to eat it all!
Similarly, at Subway you can choose from a variety of fresh vegetables to build a salad or create a sandwich on either wheat or oat bread. You can skip the meat, cheese, mayonnaise, and other creamy spreads and instead top with fresh avocado (there’s an extra charge for the avocado).
If I have to go for fast food, I always walk away with a great, satisfying meal at either of these two establishments! I think for tonight it’s going to be Subway and a concert in the park!
